Planets in Astrology

In the astrological tradition, planets are regarded as symbolic functions of the psyche and motivation. In interpretation they describe "what is happening" — impulse, emotions, thinking, the striving for recognition, discipline, or the expansion of horizons. The meaning of a planet is clarified by its placement in a sign, house, and by its aspects.

What planets represent

In the symbolic model, a planet corresponds to a function: action, feeling, thought, drive, boundaries, or growth. If a sign describes the style of expression, and a house — the life area, then the planet shows the "energy" itself or the psychic mechanism.

In a modern, pragmatic framing, planets are best understood as a language for describing habits, motivations, and ways of responding, rather than as literal celestial influences.

How planets work in the chart

Reading formula: planet — function, sign — style, house — sphere, aspect — nature of the connection.

  • Position in the sign — how the function manifests.
  • Position in the house — where the theme is realized in life.
  • Aspects — how the function interacts with other chart elements.
  • Dignities — the traditional assessment of the strength and stability of the manifestation.

For example, the same planet in different signs will express itself in different manners — straightforwardly, cautiously, diplomatically, or emotionally.

Criticism and the scientific view

From a scientific point of view, planetary symbolism does not have an established predictive basis. Interpretations depend on the school and approach, and coincidences are often explained by cognitive effects.

In a cultural context, planets are used as a language for discussing character, motivations, and life periods.
